And here we go again, in March it’s Fashion Week in Paris! AGAIN!?!? (We can hear you from here!)
It is true that fashion shows are as often for people who don’t work in the fashion business as the school breaks for those who don’t have children but, at least, Fashion Week has the merit of not causing traffic jams throughout the country! In addition, if we look closer and are honest, Fashion Week in Paris comes back very often (true) but only really interests us twice a year.
Firstly in March, to discover the Fall-Winter collections (the ones of the year after, fashion always sees forward, much further than the tip of any nose) and then in September, for the Spring-Summer fashion shows (with the same principle of the head start, of course). Spiteful tongues we are, we don’t even consider the weeks of Haute Couture, which take place in January and July, nor Fashion Weeks for Menswear and so on. Let’s stay focused.
During this month of fashion, therefore, we will attend what is commonly called the “Fashion Circus”. Please, those who need an explanation, raise your hand. It’s literally a circus, there’s no other word!
The fashion shows, presentations, cocktails, hugs and kisses follow each other, are similar, come and go, no longer look like each other… We have the feeling that there is a crowd living a World Cup final when a celebrity whose name starts with a K is said to be coming at a Balmain show, and girls who count millions or sometimes only a few thousand followers on social networks trigger flashes of street style photographers, onlookers, tourists who pass by, fashion students who do not go in class during Fashion Week, wait in drafts for hours, hope to get in, “to be a part of it” even if they are in a small corner of the room, watch the show from a “standing” position, hoping to steal a photo, a selfie with someone famous, grab a snatch of this surrounding frenzy … they are also the animals from the “circus” and are the core of the Fashion Week.
If people are so interested in the fashion shows it’s because we want to know, for sure, what we would wear in six months, always super exciting, and we want to discover the new creative silhouettes of our favorite designers (Isabel Marant at the top of the list). But to be honest, the real stars among the stars at Fashion Week are the bloggers. Previously, editors and “socialites” were at the front rows of fashion shows. Everything was happening on the catwalk, since nothing was broadcast live on the Internet. It’s all over now. Internet has become the king of this fashion kingdom. Bloggers are the undisputed masters of all these events.
Only a few star bloggers and especially those who live in or make the trip to Paris can hope to approach a fashion show seat, or have what is called an invitation in the “standing” section. These are the people who have the right to get in to attend the fashion show, but have to remain standing!
The others (so the majority of them), have access to the fashion shows anyway because almost all of them today are broadcast live on Instagram, Facebook or directly on the site of the brand. Everyone can watch it, whether you are a blogger or not. Then, bloggers will still have the eye, and fashion culture that we love to explain how to wear a particular piece, with what, or sometimes how to find elsewhere a cheaper version (and we love it!).
As for the others, their life is a dream that came to life. Those who have the chance to be on the spot, some of them are given several outfits per day, they are paid by brands only to attend cocktails, take a picture, thank you, bye. They are rather friendly one to another, pose together on the pictures (inevitably) but love each other in life too. And yes, they are often super well dressed. Is it because brands send them lots of clothes or because they have an innate sense of style? You have until the next Fashion Week to make up your mind!
